How many one another commands
These are behaviors we may do out of an overflow of our relationship with Jesus, but they are not things that we do solely unto Jesus. Other people must be involved in order to fulfill them.
Many of them have been taught by the church in the Sunday pulpit but few of them have the opportunity to be lived out by believers within the context of most church programming. Mark Howell posted a blog article about two quotes he heard from Andy Stanley at a conference he attended. The first was…. The primary activity of the church was one-anothering one another. We can be intentional about getting people stationed at posts, plugged into programs and delivering curriculum but where are we intentional about one-anothering?
Below is a list of the 59 one anothers of the New Testament. Read each one and visualize how they can be walked out in your small group:. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another. Jesus is the model for love.
His love is sacrificial. Without strings attached. We accurately model for others the love of Christ toward us when we seek to love them in the same way. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. They require loyalty and steadfast devotion. Sometimes marriages dissolve because feelings fade. We give up on friendships when they get hard. We decide that our children have so severely disappointed us as adults that we let our relationships with them dwindle as well.
But the commands to us in this portion of Romans are clear:. This verse also tells us to honor others above ourselves. What does this look like? Honoring others means thinking of their desires, wishes, and welfare at those times you want to put yourself first. It is trusting God as you let go of what you feel is your right to be right. Often times churches hand out prayer lists which can be helpful reminders, but they can also blind us to needs outside of those and discourage us from reaching out to ask others what they need.
Ask others how you can pray for them and take the time to actually take their request to Christ. Take the initiative to seek out ways to pray for others. But there are still ways to promote harmony or, conversely, sow discord while we are physically separated. Are you using your time away from others to develop a harmonious heart that will joyfully come together with others when the time arrives?
Or, instead, are you cultivating division through limited means now gossiping and slandering via texts and tweets until you can do so even more in person? To the church in Ephesus, the apostle said to bear with one another in love Ephesians How can you help those who are struggling economically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, physically? What can you do to serve those in your congregation? Take time to seek God and ask Him if you are holding on to grudges. Ask Him to help you drop those weights and forgive others.
